Marks & Spencer opens first sandwich shop

Marks & Spencer (M&S) is to open a new format stand-alone sandwich shop in Kensington, West London.

The shop, called M&S To Go, will stock a range of pre-packed sandwiches, fresh baguettes with a limited selection of hot food including soups and porridge. The 700 sq ft store is located next door to M&S’s full-line department store on the Kensington High Street.

The shop, due to open in the spring, is an addition to its Food To Go offer, which it features in 17 of its department stores.

The news follows its Kensington rival, the US grocer Whole Foods, who announced it is expanding its search for more UK sites.

Late last year, M&S revealed plans to expand in China and India. Its first store in China is expected to open during the next financial year. Furthermore, it is expanding its presence in India, where it has traded for 6 years.
