Carphone Warehouse Announce Growth Over December

Mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse has announced that it has experienced growth in excess of 3.5% over the month of December on a like-for-like basis, bucking the general trend of retailers throughout the festive period, despite reporting a general slowdown over the final quarter of 2007.

The results released today by the mobile phone retailer show that whilst sales over the last few months have slowed down it still managed to secure impressive growth through December, reflecting to a certain extent a resilience to the wider economic problems affecting retailers.

Sales were up by 11% on the year previous, despite a small 1% growth over the last quarter of the year as the company began to feel the effects of the tightening consumer spending derived from the credit crunch and higher interest rates.

Whilst the sales growth has been seen as impressive, it has nonetheless fallen below the initial growth predictions of 15%, which has seen a decrease in the share price of the Carphone Warehouse, down 4% with market expectations that the ongoing economic difficulties could begin to cause more significant problems for the group.

Additionally no information has been disclosed about the group’s iPhone sales since the launch, which has apparently come at the request of Apple, who have sought to keep initial performance for the product under wraps; a move that has been construed as potentially negative for the company which is one of only a few retailers of the products.

Furthermore with difficulties predicted for the company following the expiration of initial TalkTalk broaband contracts, the Carphone Warehouse has until now been apparently unaffected in terms of sales, with prediction for ongoing connections looking strong for the next twelve months.
