Acer Announce Olympic Sponsorship
by Stewart Douglas
Taiwan technology brand Acer has today announced it is to invest heavily to secure a sponsorship for the London Olympic Games in 2012, with a view to increasing brand awareness across more established consumer markets like Europe and the US.
In a deal signed today Acer will replace laptop manufacturer Lenovo as an official sponsor of the event, which will remain over the Winter Olympics in 2010 and the London games in 2012, which will also allow the company to use registered Olympic logos and designs.
Whilst the deal has been the subject of much conversation over the last few days, there has as of yet been no figure placed on the contract, nor any indication from any of the major sponsorship agreements signed up over the last few months.
The agreement will take effect as of the first of January in 2009, from which point the company can tie in branding as a top tier partner of the Olympic sponsorship scheme, and will link the brand in to the marketing for the games along with Coca-Cola and Visa.
The company, formed in 1976, has undertaken aggressive marketing in high profile events over the last few years in order to raise awareness of its brand amongst one of the most hotly contested markets – consumer computer sales. As well as sponsoring the Olympics the company has also sponsored racing teams and top-flight football teams across Europe.
As a result of the increase in branding spend the company has forecast a direct rise in revenues to the extent of $40 billion as its profile increases over the course of the Winter and Summer games, in addition to the added revenues forecast from wider events branding strategy.
