Discount chain Aldi beats big four on quality

Budget supermarket chain, Aldi, has beaten Britain’s big four chains on the quality of its food. The German-owned retailer, which is short for Albrecht Discount, is one of the largest retail chains globally.

The company collected a series of prizes following blind taste tests by chefs and food industry experts. Their taste was vindicated at Checkout magazine’s Quality Food Awards. Aldi’s Specially Selected Italian Stone-Baked Pizza Romagna won the top award of the night while the best frozen food product was its beef wellington. The discount chain also won the bread section for a chocolate chip brioche.

Upmarket chain Waitrose also received many top prizes and together with Aldi, out-performed the big four who include Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons.

The Aldi group operates about 7,600 individual stores worldwide with a new store opening each week. They tend to be in poorer areas and are increasingly patronised by the middle-classes following rave reviews from shoppers.
