Yahoo And Adobe Agree To Sell Dynamic PDF Advertising
by Stewart Douglas
Search engine giant Yahoo has today announced a strategic partnership with software company Adobe that will enable contextual adverts to placed within the content of the widespread PDF format, in order to provide an additional revenue stream for online publishers and a new advertising channel for its business clients.
In the first more of its kind, Yahoo will now be able to place advertising links embedded within the content of files published under the format for online viewing, in a bid to secure further advertising revenues for the US-based online media company.
The move follows several other high profile agreements in recent weeks which have seen the company team up with Ebay and TV company Comcast in widening its possible advertising distribution for clients, as it attempts to close the gap on leading rival Google in the online advertising market.
The new in-text adverts will be capable of being altered depending on the intended audience of each document, and will also be able to be rotated to ensure more adverts can be displayed to each document reader in order to enhance advertiser value.
Whilst the adverts will be inserted into dynamic documents for online and digital readership, they will be unable to be translated into printed format, to ensure documents for print don’t contain hyperlinks with a view to maintaining the competitive edge of the PDF format.
PDF files have proven a smash with online users, particularly from within the business and professional markets for their polished appearance and suitability to professional print over other document formats. It is estimated that the deal announced today could be worth potentially tens of millions of dollars a year to both companies, and could lead the way in next generation online contextual advertising.
