Travelodge Announces Rapid Expansion

Low cost travel company Travelodge has today announced it intends to increase its exposure to the Spanish market, building around 100 new hotels in Spain over the course of the next fifteen years as part of its wider expansion strategy throughout Europe.

The company today announced that it is planning major new developments across Spain after initial test runs highlighted strong demand for its own particular brand of low cost accommodation, particularly amongst domestic business travellers and city tourists.

The plans were unveiled in two stages, looking to firstly attract business from Spanish domestic customers before appealing to the UK holiday market. With Spain undergoing strong consumer development and the growth of broadband access throughout the country, Travelodge has said that it anticipates strong growth in the region over the next few years.

Speaking today on the move, a spokesperson from Travelodge said that the move sees the next phase in the company’s development into the wider international market, which it envisaged providing the majority of its growth over the coming few decades, with a view to expanding the brand on a global scale over the long term.

The news comes just months after the company announced ambitious plans to build a further 40 locations throughout the UK over the same time period, which could see it further secure its hold of the low cost accommodation market.

Travelodge was recently acquired in an equity buyout by Dubai based group Dubai International Capital which saw it valued in at around £680 million. The move to increase its hotel portfolio throughout the UK is designed to help attract more business in light of the 2012 London Olympics, which the company has already forecast to be a significantly profitable event with tourists from around the world looking for local accommodation.
