Emirates Contract To Buy 81 Airbus Planes
by Stewart Douglas
Dubai-based airline Emirates has today announced a strategic contract with Airbus which will see the supply of over 80 Airbus range planes worth in excess of £10 billion, further securing the global supply of the new Airbus models.
Emirates has today committed to buying 70 of the Airbus A350 models and 11 of the innovative flagship A380 planes, which boast two decks rather than one. The deal also secures an option for a further 50 models, with a potential valuation of £16 billion over the life of the agreement.
The agreement will have a knock-on effect for British motor manufacturer Rolls-Royce, who have been selected to provide engines for the ordered Airbus models, with a potential value of over £4 billion for the firm.
The news comes just days after Rolls-Royce announced it had secured a contract with International Lease Finance for 20 engine pairs for similar Airbus aircraft, with a potential value of £400 million, further securing the immediate future of the BMW owned firm.
The order has also been well received by EADS, the parent company of Airbus who have fallen on difficult financial circumstances as a result of prolonged delays in the release of its new aircraft models and the ongoing strength of the euro.
The company has already pledged to slash around 10,000 employees as a result of falling profitability in its business operation derived from externalities and design process problems with the ever popular A380 and A350 models.
Speaking on the agreement Emirates announced that the deal would see substantial growth in its fleet over the coming years in connection with its wider growth strategy, with a view to continuing the regional development of Dubai as an international business forum.
