Primark overtakes Asda for cheap clothes

The battle for jeans costing less than £15 and £3 vest tops has just got more brutal following the news that Primark will overtake George at Asda as the UK’s most popular value clothing retailer.

Analysts have forecast that Primark, the Irish-based fashion chain, will take an 18.4% share of the value clothing market this year.

Primark will increase sales in the cheaper clothing market by 8.9% compared to 2006 with analysts indicating that its mixture of inexpensive prices and prime location stores are the key to its success.

According to the UK Value Clothing Retailers 2007 report, Primark will be top of the table closely followed by George at Asda, Tesco, New Look and TK Maxx.

This year budget fashion sales will hit £8.5 billion – nearly a quarter of all clothes purchased.

However, growth may slow down as other chain stores lower their prices meaning chains like Primark and George at Asda will now compete with mid-market chains like Marks & Spencer and Next.
