Nintendo Wii is a huge success
by Kay Murchie
The huge success of the Nintendo Wii computer games console has taken everybody by surprise, including Nintendo, making it a Christmas gift winner.
Analysts said Nintendo Wii sales have been particularly strong in the last 2 months, even outselling the popular PlayStation 3 by Sony.
Nintendo announced yesterday that it expects to sell 17.5 million Wiis worldwide this year, 1 million more than it forecasted.
However, it’s not just the Wii that is doing exceptionally well. The handheld DS player by Nintendo is expected to sell 28 million, 2 million more than previously anticipated.
The Wii went on sale in the US and Canada in November last year, 2 days after the PlayStation 3 debuted in the US.
Nintendo sold over 600,000 of Wii game consoles in the first 8 days since they became available in North America. This topped the 200,000 PlayStation 3 units that its competitor Sony sold in the US.
The Wii console began retailing in the UK in December last year whereas the PlayStation 3 did not go on sale until March this year.
