Apple Performs Well On iPhone And iPod Release

Tech giant Apple has today announced a stark increase in profitability over the third quarter as a result for ongoing demand for its flagship iPod MP3 player, as well as strong sales throughout its product lines.

Additionally, the launch of the new iPhone product has also seen strong performance for the California-based company that holds significant market share in most Western economies for MP3 players, as well as having a strong cult following and grass roots business support for its computer and operating system products.

Profits for the period ended September were up by over two thirds, at around 67% on results prior in reflection of growing demand, particularly for its new iPod Nano, which has seen a design overhaul of the previous best selling model.

The company today reported a profit of $905 million, up from $542 million in the year previous, predominantly down to the release of the new iPod and iPhone models. The news saw shares rise significantly in early trading, with results far exceeding previous corporate and market expectations for performance.

The company has also reported strong ongoing sales of Mac units, which have been somewhat overshadowed in recent times by its innovations in other ancillary markets. However, the shift towards more sustainability from its computer business has helped settle analysts and shareholders alike, with the prospect of ongoing improved performance likely towards the end of 2007 and in to 2008.

The iPhone, very much in its infancy has been the source of much controversy since its release. Linked to exclusive service providers, the iPhone is only available on particularly long contracts and still requires a substantial cash outlay from the customer, which some analysts have said could dent sales in the long run for Apple. It remains to be seen whether Apple will realise similar success in its iPhone line as in its other divisions in recent years.
