John Lewis – outlook is positive for festive season
by Kay Murchie
Retailer, John Lewis, has noted a boost in sales after a demand for its autumn clothing ranges, following the cooler weather. Items such as gloves and scarves drove sales 7% higher in the week to September 29.
However, fears over the retail sector have increased as consumer spending comes under pressure following 5 recent interest rate increases. However, the Waitrose owner and department store chain described the performance as a strong step up as they approach the Christmas period.
Overall, sales across the partnership were 7.1% up on the same week last year, with strong sales also noted from the Waitrose supermarkets. John Lewis said the roll out of its festive offering was well under way, despite the Christmas trading period set to be the most crucial in years for the retail sector.
The group added that Waitrose sales were ahead of budget – up 7.6% on the same week 12 months ago. However, despite the strong weekly figures, in September John Lewis announced that it expects much more challenging market conditions in the second half of the year.
Furthermore, the Nottingham store has became the first to sell an ‘upside down’ Christmas tree. It is designed to accommodate more presents underneath and is on sale for £75.
