Talks to resolve Royal Mail issues
by Kay Murchie
Royal Mail and a second union are to enter talks today in an attempt to prevent a strike over pension plans. Royal Mail is already in turmoil with its 130,000 employees, including a dispute with its postal workers over wages and working conditions.
Now the Unite Union, which represents 12,000 postal managers, has threatened industrial action of pension proposals. Unite has declared that the proposals will give the company a £1.5 billion bonus at the expense of workers, which many have nicknamed the “great mail robbery”.
The spokesperson added that even accounting for inflation, the £1.5 billion that the members could lose far exceeds the amount taken from Royal Mail by the great train robbers, referring to the notorious 1963 robbery.
The spokesperson concluded that failure to settle the issues at today’s meeting will lead to strikes.
A spokesperson for Royal Mail said no decisions had yet been taken.
