US dollar remains steady versus sterling, euro
by Elaine Frei
Sterling briefly rose to $2.0005 in relation to the US dollar on Monday before retreating to $1.9990, about where it had been. The dollar was also steady versus the euro at $1.3460. Meanwhile, the New Zealand dollar traded at $0.7655 versus the US dollar, gaining ground after declining on Friday amid rumors that the Reserve Bank of New Zealand would intervene again to try to rein in the kiwi.
The Japanese yen was stronger as it added 0.2 percent versus the US dollar to ¥123.60. It was also 0.2 percent higher to ¥166.50 in relation to the euro and gained 0.3 percent to ¥247.05 against sterling. The gains came on comments from the Bank for International Settlements that recent weakness in the yen is “anomalous”.
