Foreign energy companies rise on ADR

Shares in foreign energy companies traded in the United States were up on Monday on the continuing rise in crude oil prices, driving the Bank of New York’s index of leading ADRs up by 0.6 percent as a whole.
The index of leading Asian ADRs gained 0.6 percent to 112.06 and the European ADR index gained 0.7 percent. The European index was aided by cellphone maker Nokia’s 1.4 percent gain to $16.16 on a report that Cisco Systems Inc. was thinking about making a bid for Nokia. The index of Latin American ADRs was up 0.5 percent to 166.38.
The oil sector showed significant gains. Shares in BP Plc, the British oil company, were up 2 percent to $69.26, and Royal Dutch Shell gained 1.1 percent to $66.68. Petrobras, the Brazilian oil company, advanced by 0.7 percent to $57.10, China Petroleum rose 3.3 percent to $44.95, and CNOOC gained 3.5 percent to $71.14. Sasol, the South African oil and chemicals group gained 4.3 percent to $31.99.
Shares in South African companies mining gold fell, however, on a nationwide strike that brought work in the mines there to a halt. Harmony Gold Mining Co. lost 3.3 percent to $8.10 and Gold Fields Ltd. Fell by 1.5 percent to $10.92.
