PSP sells $150 in first US week

by Brian Turner

Sony’s new PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld game console, launched in North America on March 24, has the company claiming $150 million sales in the first week and over 500,000 units sold in the first two days of availability.

Still, some analysts, citing reports of continuing availability of the PSP in many stores, are calling the debut less successful than fulfilling Sony’s full expectations for the new product.

Sony claims that the debut did fulfill expectations, especially in light of the fact that the PSP was launched outside the traditional holiday buying season and that many retailers were closed for Easter.

Besides games, the PSP will also play music and films, allows for instant messaging, and will play shows recorded on Tivo recorders. It does not offer internet browsing, however.

Sony has focused its marketing push for the PSP on the U.S. and has in fact delayed its European launch.

They have already sold over 1 million units in Japan, where the PSP was first launched.
