Music programs to carry Napster promos

by Brian Turner

The UK division of Napster is branching out from online music downloading and into television.

The digital music service has made a deal with the UK’s Channel 4 to produce a series of 11 short music programs featuring popular artists, beginning with the Scottish band Garbage.

Music from these shows will be available to Napster’s online subscribers. This move, characterized by Napster’s vice-president as “the next logical step” for the company, also seems to be a first step in a predicted move into video and movie subscription services.

Napster’s chairman and chief executive said in January that the company was considering moving into these areas, as well as into video-games.

Napster is currently in competition with Apple’s iTunes to become the preferred model for the distribution of music in digital formats.
